Terakoya: A Traditional Place of Learning in Japan
Terakoya were community learning places that spread throughout Japan during the Edo period.
They were places where people gathered to learn reading, writing, practical knowledge, manners, and values for living well in society.
Wa-gokoro Terakoya carries this spirit into the modern world, creating a place where people from different cultures can reflect on life through the wisdom of Japanese traditions.
Learning Reading and Writing
People learned Kanji and Hiragana through calligraphy, gaining the ability to express themselves through letters and written communication.
Foundations of Arithmetic
People learned calculation methods using the abacus (soroban), developing practical thinking for daily life and work.
Moral Education
People learned manners, consideration for others, and values for living together in society.
The Circle of Japanese Culture
※This diagram represents both our current activities and the areas we hope to develop in the future through new connections.
Culture is not just one form.
Japanese culture is a circle of many practices—
movement, words, tea, writing, harmony, and presence.
By touching each one lightly,
you begin to understand the whole.
Wa-gokoro Terakoya invites you
to explore Japanese culture with curiosity, gentleness, and openness—
not to master one thing,
but to feel how everything is connected.

Through exploring Japanese culture, many people find their mind becoming calmer and their awareness of others deepening.
This is not a place for pressure or competition. It is a gentle space where you can sit, breathe, and encounter Japanese culture at your own pace.
Courses are also available in English, welcoming people from around the world who wish to explore the depth of Japanese culture beyond language barriers.
Even simple curiosity is a wonderful first step. You are warmly welcome here.
Learner
The one who learns
We value curiosity and an open mind. By encountering Japanese culture, you begin to feel its depth—not only through knowledge, but through experience that gently enters everyday life.
Messenger
The one who conveys thoughts
Those who deeply understand the spirit of Japanese culture naturally begin to share it with others. Not simply by teaching, but by conveying its essence through stories, presence, and human connection.
Creator
The one who creates value
Some people go further—using what they have learned to create new value. By blending Japanese traditions with modern sensibilities, they open new paths for culture to continue into the future.
Terakoya is not a school.
It is a place for cultural dialogue.
